WORK EXPERIENCE
Smithsonian Institution – Network Engineer – 09/03 – Present
As a Network Engineer at the Smithsonian, am responsible for deployment of Novell ZENworks to 6,000 users local to the D.C. area as well as users in New York, Panama, and other locations. Headed the Desktop Patch Review Board for evaluation and deployment of software and operating system patches and service packs to users via ZENworks and Microsoft SUS. Built and maintained Novell and Microsoft Windows servers for automated software deployment and patch management. Worked with Help Desk and Desktop Management to ensure that end users received prompt and polite problem resolution. Ancillary duties included maintainance of a software library and an associated license management tracking system, deployment of a GHOST multicast server, creation of ZENapps to silently deploy software and patches to machines, creation of Group Policies to secure PC's, and use of HEAT Help Desk software to document, track, and resolve user trouble tickets.
FAA/TSA – Network Engineer – 12/01 to 9/03
Federal employee in support of classified networks, remote communications, and personnel support. Migrated an unclassified Windows NT 4.0 network to Windows 2000 in native Active Directory mode and prepared for accreditation at the NICAP (National Information Certification Accreditation Process) for civilian Federal Systems. Met all requirements stipulated by DITSCAP (DoD Information Technology Security Certification and Accreditation Process). Applied all system lock-down patches and security settings to meet certification and IATO (Interim Approval To Operate) standards to certify the system as an accredited Secret level network. Assist TSA and FAA in the following areas: Migration from cc:Mail to Microsoft Exchange; Migration from AUTODIN to DMS (Defense Messaging System); Coordination of off-site COOP (Continuity of Operations) requirements with contractors and the CIA at a remote location; and Creation of a SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) for TSA intelligence evaluation and threat analysis. Built an 11-server classified Secret network with AMHS (Automated Message Handling System), Lotus Notes, and other capabilities. Implemented proof-of-concept RASP (Remote Access Security Program) Secret level dial-in access to support Salt Lake City Watch Officer and Atlantic City FAM (Federal Air Marshall) Olympics activities. Active in development of network schematics and written network documentation with Visio 2002 and other products.
Advanced Management Technology, Inc. - Senior Network Engineer – 07/00 to Present
As a Senior Network Engineer for the Federal Aviation Administration, Civil Aviation Security branch, support 250 users local to the Washington D.C. metro area and 150 users in remote locations around the world. Implemented Citrix MetaFrame XP for remote user connectivity, led hardware and software testing for full-scale upgrade of all client machines from Windows 95 to Windows 2000 Pro in a mixed Novell 5.1 and Windows NT environment, procured and tested Cisco PIX firewalls for the local segment, and perform special tasks as assigned.
TekSystems - Network Consultant - 01/00 to 06/00
Contracted to a high tech firm in Calverton, Maryland to manage an NT network supporting software developers. Assisted 100 developers with PC and server issues related to running Oracle, Sybase, Microsoft SQL, and other database and development tools. Managed the Microsoft Exchange server and configured Outlook 2000 clients for local connectivity and resource sharing as well as remote access to their email via RAS VPN across the Internet. Traveled to Columbus, Ohio to implement a Terminal Server/Metaframe solution that allows Macintosh users in downtown Columbus to run the firm's proprietary Windows-based software operating on a server farm near the Ohio State University campus. Began a feasibility project using Red Hat Linux 6.2 as a platform for automated credit card processing and Oracle development.
Advanced Management Technology, Inc. - Senior Network Engineer - 04/97 to 12/99
Responsible for network design, upgrade plans, capacity planning, and systems requirements. Implemented multiple redundant load-shared Windows NT Terminal Server/Citrix Metaframe Server-based computing servers to support international IP-based access to all headquarters applications. Perform long-distance troubleshooting, system analysis, network configuration, and technical writing tasks. Act as the project lead for computer security and applications deployment. Oversaw conversion of server and hard drive equipment from outdated hardware to rack-mounted Compaq 3000 and 1850R servers. Performed as primary technician in conversion from multiple Novell 3.11 servers to a full NDS implementation of Novell 4.11. Led in planning and execution of the conversion from Windows 3.11 to a IPX/Private IP-based Windows 95 network.
Decision Systems Technologies, Inc. - Project Manager - 07/93 to 03/97
Supervised a staff of Novell network technicians and Help Desk personnel to ensure that network services and applications were available for over 650 local and remote network users. Acted as technical lead to maintain operational, analytical, and planning responsibility for the seventeen-server horizontal Token Ring FDDI backbone and Ethernet 10BaseT Novell 3.1x and 4.x network. Supervised conversion of users from DOS-based network applications to the Windows 3.1 environment. Responsibilities included operational support for shared Windows- and DOS-based network applications, remote network access, and user hotline support. Daily activities included extensive client interface, technical reporting, project planning, documentation development, personnel management, and financial forecasting, budgeting, and planning.
World Computer Systems, Inc. - Manager of Operations and Communications - 01/89 to 07/93
As the Manager of Operations and Communications, supervised a staff of technicians on-site in two computer centers at the FAA. Functioned as a "shirtsleeve manager" of E-mail hardware/software to track proper translation and routing between ten E-mail packages/protocols and six gateways/bridges. Ensured that cc:Central, the 16,000-user international E-mail WAN, was available for users worldwide. Monitored and reported Wang VS and Data General systems status, coordinated backups, and scheduled preventative maintenance. Conducted risk analysis/contingency planning and supervised the conversion from Wang VS to PCs on a Client/Server StarLAN network. Traveled to Brussels, Belgium to conduct a remote system audit and design WAN connections to a U.S. Data General mainframe.
US Air Force - Cryptologic Supervisor - 11/79 to 1/89
As a Cryptologic Supervisor in Osan, Korea, supervised a team of intelligence report writers, translators, and computer users. Created a training database on the E-Systems proprietary computer bank. At the National Security Agency, Fort Meade, Maryland, compiled UNIX training documentation for C-language shell routines and operated UNIX workstations. In Osan, Korea, operated as a Wang mini-mainframe user and trainer, managed an on-line Geographic Information System, and trained users in system operations. In Kunia, Hawaii, operated UNIX-based Hazeltine terminals, updated databases with intelligence information, and trained operators in system operations and security requirements.
